Saturday 10 December 2011. Part of Breakfast at Noon.
Saturday December 10th, 2011, ADA’s first Breakfast at Noon took place in one of the beautiful, old spaces of the Nationaal Onderwijsmuseum. Two members of the Belgrade based artist group Skart presented a selection of projects from the last decade, talking, amongst other things, about participatory processes within their artistic practice. As a special guest they brought a lady who has been working with them for ten years on a project called 'New Embroideries’, mixing a traditional Serbian craft with poetic expression and political activism. In a brief 'show & tell’ she showed us her craft. Iratxe Jaio and Klaas van Gorkum presented some recent projects and talked about Occupy Amsterdam, which they have been involved as the co-initiators of the artists’ tent. Both of them being interested in participatory processes, but coming from very different backgrounds, the breakfast made visible quite different approaches to art and activism. One of our guests later remarked that there seems to be quite an apparent cultural dimension to this as well: the breakfast seemed to juxtapose a call for solidarity and civil duty on the one hand and a (western) emphasis on autonomy and questioning of democratic processes on the other. We are looking forward to continuing the series and further exploring themes such as the voice of the artist, how one speaks, both literally and metaphorically through the production of work, and the position of the artist in relation to notions of labour and free time.
